What is Bycatch?


Bycatch is when marine mammals are caught unententionally. Alot of the fish that they catch are not wanted, unfortunately many are endangered species such as seabirds, sea turtles, sharks, dolphins and other mammals. Many of them are discarded due to undersize or unhealthy problems. 6.3 to 27 million tonnes of fish can be discarded back into the sea dead.



The fishing methods that usually cause High to moderate levels of bycatch:

  • Trawling-  High
  • Gillnetting -High
  • Longlining-High
  • Dredging-High
  • Purse Seines-Moderate
  • Weirs-Moderate
  • Pots or Traps-Moderate
